Last Chance to Apply for 2013 Elk Hunts in Kentucky ? Land of 10,000 Elk.

Kentucky Department Fish Wildlife

Anderson County, KY --(Ammoland.com)- Frankfort, KY ?-(Ammoland.com)- Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife will draw 1,000 applicants in early May to hunt the largest elk herd east of the Rockies this fall. Hunters must apply online by April 30th (midnight Eastern time) to enter the random drawing for 2013 elk permits. Entries are only $10 each.

Kentucky offers a variety of elk hunting opportunities, and seasons run from September through December. Applicants may apply for 2 of 4 permit types: firearm bull, archery bull, firearm cow, and archery cow. Crossbows may be used with archery permits during designated timeframes. Those age 15 and under may also apply for 10 youth, bull/cow permits.

Elk hunter success is about 70% in Kentucky. The number of permits available has steadily increased since the hunt?s inception in 2001, beginning with just 12 permits. For those drawn, hunting license plus elk permit cost $495 for nonresidents and $50 for residents. Hunters may bring along as many helpers as desired. Last year?s odds of being drawn and more details are posted at fw.ky.gov.

The elk hunt is held in 16 southeastern counties that occupy 4.2 million acres?much bigger than Yellowstone National Park. There are 574,000 acres of public land in the elk hunt area, along with ample private land. Private guide/outfitter services are also available.

Kentucky?s elk restoration program is one of modern wildlife management?s greatest success stories. Elk were extirpated in Kentucky by the early 1800s. Elk restocking began in 1997 with the release of 7 animals. A total of 1,554 elk were reintroduced in Kentucky by 2002, with animals provided by 6 western states having healthy elk populations. Within 10 years, the population reached the target of 10,000.

Those interested in the hunt should apply now. The deadline is midnight April 30. Don?t allow last minute Internet problems or unexpected diversions to keep you from the hunt of a lifetime in the ?Happy Hunting Ground? that is Kentucky!

Sanford, Colbert Busch debate for first time

(AP) ? Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford and Democrat Elizabeth Colbert, after sparring from a distance for weeks, finally face off Monday in the pitched race for the state's vacant 1st Congressional District seat.

The two meet Monday evening at The Citadel in a debate sponsored by the Patch news service, the South Carolina Radio Network and Charleston television station WCBD. The debate is being cablecast by C-SPAN.

It's their first joint appearance in the campaign that started earlier when incumbent congressman Tim Scott was appointed to the state's vacant U.S. Senate seat. Sanford and Colbert Busch, as well as Green Party Candidate Eugene Platt, compete May 7 in a special election in the district that runs from northeast of Charleston south to the resort of Hilton Head Island.

Sanford's public career was sidelined in 2009 after he revealed he had an extramarital affair with an Argentine woman to whom he is now engaged. For weeks now, Sanford has been trying to make a political comeback, hammering Colbert Busch, the sister of comedian Stephen Colbert, for not debating more.

Sanford has accused her of running what he called a stealth campaign, fueled by out-of-state money and that the voters don't know where she stands on the issues.

"In the absence of everything else this (debate) takes on added significance because she hasn't debated," Sanford said.

Colbert Busch's campaign has responded that she has been busy with her own aggressive campaign schedule.

"I'm really looking forward to this debate," Colbert Busch said Friday. "I think what you will see when Mark and I are standing on the same stage is you will see an enormous difference between the two of us and you will see an enormous difference between the two campaigns. I'm really looking forward to it."

But she said she didn't think the campaign turns on the debate.

"I think people understand our campaign and what our campaign is doing resonates throughout the district," she added.

(AP) ? Inbee Park was already preparing to congratulate Carlota Ciganda for winning the inaugural North Texas LPGA Shootout.

Park, the top-ranked woman in the world, was in the middle of a solid final round and still trailed by two strokes after the playing partners both had birdies at the par-5 10th.

Everything changed in a two-hole stretch, when Park went ahead with consecutive pars. The 24-year-old South Korean went on to a bogey-free 4-under 67 that put her one stroke ahead of Ciganda, good enough for her third victory this season and fifth in her last 18 starts.

"She was hitting fairways and greens and making putts," said Park, who finished at 13 under. "And I thought I played really great today, but I just missed a lot of birdie opportunities, so I thought this tournament might not be mine because I missed that many opportunities and Carlota was playing great golf. But she made a couple mistakes on the back nine."

Ciganda's drive at the 416-yard 14th hole settled in the right rough with a tree between her and the green, and her shot from about 130 yards clipped a branch and came up short. She had a chance to save par but her 6-foot putt was short, and Park's par had her within a stroke of the lead.

After stepping away from her approach at No. 15, to a green surrounded by water on three sides, Ciganda hit a shot that went to the right and then rolled down into the water. Ciganda had to go back to a drop zone, where the 22-year-old Spaniard had a decent pitch before her first putt rolled over the left edge of the green for a double bogey 6.

Park had another par and never trailed again.

"I'm very happy with my round and with my week. ... I had two bad holes on the back nine," Ciganda said.

With the $195,000 check for first place, Inbee exceeded $6 million in career earnings and will be No. 1 for the third week in a row. It was her sixth career LPGA victory, along with four more wins in Japan.

Fifth-ranked Suzann Pettersen from Norway, the winner in Hawaii last week, had a closing 66 to get to 10 under and finish third. Hee Young Park (64) and So Yeon Ryu (68) tied for fourth at 275.

Ciganda played last season on the Ladies European Tour, where she was the top rookie and the top money winner ? the first player since Laura Davies in 1985 to accomplish that feat. She won twice in Europe last year and now has her best LPGA finish.

At the 403-yard 8th hole, Park made a birdie before Ciganda followed with one of her own and responded with a slight fist pump when her ball dropped into the cup. They both had pars at No. 9, where Park was closer to the hole even though she was missed the green to the left, and they traded birdies again at the par-5 10th.

"I was happy and playing good and having fun and enjoying the day," said Ciganda, who had a closing 70. "And then I think, let me see, the hole it bounced to the right, but I had a bogey there and then hit it to the water on 15."

Caroline Masson had a 75 and finished eight shots back. The LPGA Tour rookie from Germany led after each of the first two rounds and started the final round tied for second with Park.

Hee Young Park's 64 was the best round of the day on the 6,439-yard course with plenty of sloping fairways and raised greens.

Stacy Lewis, the Texas native and No. 2 player in the world, had a closing 66 when all six birdies and her only bogey came between Nos. 7-17. She tied for seventh for her sixth top-10 finish this season.

At the end of her round, Lewis signed the back brace of a 6-year-old Dallas girl who was diagnosed with scoliosis at 18 months old. Lewis wore a similar brace 18 hours a day for seven years after being diagnosed with scoliosis at age 11 and missed her first collegiate season after a spinal fusion.

Third-ranked Na Yeon Choi, among the four players tied for seventh, had 44 consecutive bogey-free holes and was 9 under before consecutive bogeys at Nos. 10-12. She went on to a 72.

Inbee Park sank a 4-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th after Ciganda also birdied even after her final drive went into the right rough. But they had an unusual wait after hitting their drives, when Jee Young Lee, playing two groups ahead of them, had to replay the hole.

Before Lee signed her scorecard, officials determined she took an improper drop after her drive at No. 18 went out of bounds. Lee carded a 10 before Ciganda and Park got to play out the hole.

"It was all right. I mean it was actually really good, it ended up really good for me because I made a birdie," Park said of the delay. "Maybe if I hit it in the water maybe I could have blamed it on them."

Scientists control chirality in carbon nanotubes

Apr. 29, 2013 ? An ultimate goal in the field of carbon nanotube research is to synthesise single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with controlled chiralities. Twenty years after the discovery of SWNTs, scientists from Aalto University in Finland, A.M. Prokhorov General Physics Institute RAS in Russia and the Center for Electron Nanoscopy of Technical University of Denmark (DTU) have managed to control chirality in carbon nanotubes during their chemical vapor deposition synthesis.

Carbon nanotube structure is defined by a pair of integers known as chiral indices (n,m), in other words, chirality.

"Chirality defines the optical and electronic properties of carbon nanotubes, so controlling it is a key to exploiting their practical applications," says Professor Esko I. Kauppinen, the leader of the Nanomaterials Group in Aalto University School of Science.

Over the years, substantial progress has been made to develop various structure-controlled synthesis methods. However, precise control over the chiral structure of SWNTs has been largely hindered by a lack of practical means to direct the formation of the metal nanoparticle catalysts and their catalytic dynamics during tube growth.

"We achieved an epitaxial formation of Co nanoparticles by reducing a well-developed solid solution in CO," reveals Maoshuai He, a postdoctoral researcher at Aalto University School of Chemical Technology.

"For the first time, the new catalyst was employed for selective growth of SWNTs," adds senior staff scientist Hua Jiang from Aalto University School of Science.

By introducing the new catalysts into a conventional CVD reactor, the research team demonstrated preferential growth of semiconducting SWNTs (?90%) with an exceptionally high population of (6,5) tubes (53%) at 500 ?C. Furthermore, they also showed a shift of the chiral preference from (6,5) tubes at 500 ?C to (7, 6) and (9, 4) nanotubes at 400 ?C.

"These findings open new perspectives both for structural control of SWNTs and for elucidating their growth mechanisms, thus are important for the fundamental understanding of science behind nanotube growth," comments Professor Juha Lehtonen from Aalto University.

This work is financially supported by the CNB-E project in Aalto University through the Multidisciplinary Institute of Digitalization and Energy (MIDE) program and the Aalto Energy Efficiency program project (MOPPI). This work made use of facilities at Nanomicroscopy Center of Aalto University in Finland and at the Center for Electron Nanoscopy at the Technical University in Denmark sponsored by the A.P. M?ller and Chastine Mc-Kinney M?ller Foundation.

Water splashed out of the sink and onto the green formica countertops, forming a small puddle that oozed at the edge of the basin. Sol watched the streaming water from the faucet fill the cereal bowl he?d just put in the sink, turning the milk from white to a thin, translucent color. A few flakes of puffed rice bobbed on the surface, then spilled over into the drain.

?There?s my handsome son.? Sol turned and looked over his shoulder at his mother. She stood there beaming at him as if he?d hung the moon, her frame shriveled with age and her grey hair dyed pale apricot in the fashion so many of the ladies in her Bingo league sported. ?Where you off to today, huh??

Sol looked down at the white undershirt he was wearing, the worn-in jeans, and the socks on his feet. ?I?m not going anywhere,? he said, but his confusion made the statement sound more like a question than a statement of fact. ?Where are you going??

His mother was in her ?good? pearls, which were really just her best looking fake ones. Though he was sure she had real jewelry stashed away somewhere, it seemed only to come out at weddings, funerals, and Bar Mitzvahs. A brocade pair of Moroccan slippers were on her little feet and a small handbag was clutched under her arm.

?Off to see the girls!? She winked, teeth flashing in a smile. ?And Doris is bringing her granddaughter. Maybe you want to go??

There was a suggestive tone to her voice, and it didn?t take a genius to figure out what she was implying. At least once a month since he?d moved back in with her, his mother had been trying to set him up with all her friend?s daughters and granddaughters. She was forgetting though; he?d already met Doris?s granddaughter, and the girl- while charming- was a charming nineteen year old. At thirty-two, he?d felt like a pervert all through a long, awkward dinner in which his mother and Doris tried to set him up with the teenager. He?d smiled politely, nodded at all the right times, and made sure not to make contact with her when passing the peas.

Sol felt his neck go slightly warm, but said nothing for a moment. He carefully deposited his cereal bowl into the dishwasher, then turned and gave his mother a quick kiss on her brow. ?Thanks, ma,? he told her. ?But no.?

He hurried out of the kitchen before the inevitable interrogation began, passing through the formal living room his mother kept spotless and down the stairs to the basement. The air became slightly cooler as he descended. Two doors led off to separate rooms, the left leading to his temporary bedroom, the right leading to a storage space his father had once used as a workshop. It still held all of his tools, perfectly in place on his peg board as if he was going to come back for them. Sol shook his head to himself and went into his room.

The cellphone on his side table was glowing. He?d missed a call and had a voice message. He flopped onto his bed and reached blindly for the phone, then dialed his own number. The message began to play.

?Hey, Sol. It?s me, Juanita. Hey, I was wondering if... Actually, I think we better talk about this in person. Will you call me back??

Sol looked down at the phone that was cradled in his hand and sighed. Call her, one part of him was saying. Return her call. The other part of him was screaming at him to delete Juanita?s number from his phone book and write her off altogether. It was time to get over it, the voice in his head said. He scrolled through his phone book and pondered her name, face contorted into a deep frown. His hand hovered over the button to delete her- if not from his life and memory, at least from his phone.

?Argh,? he sighed, and closed his eyes. His finger descended onto the button and the phone beeped. He opened his eyes and saw that she?d been deleted. Sol felt stunned, and he swallowed hard against the knot in his throat. It refused to go down, sticking to the inside of his throat like one of those bitter horse-pills. His fingers clenched the material of the blanket he was sitting on.

That was when the panic set in. What had he done? He didn?t know Juanita?s number by heart! How was he going to get it back if he needed to call her? He didn?t know any of her friend?s numbers. He didn?t even know where she lived anymore.

?Shit,? he hissed, putting his head in his hands.

?Sweetheart!? His mother?s voice rang down from upstairs. ?I?m going out! Dinner?s in the fridge!?

He heard the door open, then close; heard her key in the lock. Minutes passed, then Sol crossed the room to his computer. He pulled up the search engine, hands poised over the keys.

How do I retrieve a deleted number on my phone?

Up came a link to a small electronics shop.

NATO: 4 service members killed in plane crash

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A plane crashed in southern Afghanistan on Saturday, killing four international service members on the same day the Taliban said they were gearing up to launch their spring offensive with attacks on military and diplomatic targets.

Initial reporting indicated there was no enemy activity in the area where the plane went down, the NATO-led coalition said in a statement confirming the crash. Coalition personnel secured the site and were investigating the cause of the crash, NATO said.

The brief statement did not identify the nationalities of the victims, or say exactly where the crash occurred.

However, Mohammad Jan Rasoulyar, deputy governor of the southern province of Zabul, said an aircraft belonging to foreign forces crashed Saturday afternoon in Shah Joy district. He confirmed the site had been surrounded by international forces.

The spring Taliban offensive, which is to begin on Sunday, comes as U.S.-backed efforts to try to reconcile the Islamic militant movement with the Afghan government have so far failed.

Insurgents already have stepped up attacks this spring as they try to position themselves for power ahead of national elections and the planned withdrawal of most U.S. and other foreign combat troops by the end of 2014.

The Afghan Defense Ministry said its security forces are prepared for Taliban's new campaign. "The Afghan National Army is ready to neutralize the offensive," the ministry said, adding that the soldiers now have the support and trust of many Afghans.

The Taliban's leadership vowed on Saturday that "every possible tactic will be utilized in order to detain or inflict heavy casualties on the foreign transgressors" during its spring offensive.

In a sign of Taliban's determination to replace Afghanistan's government with one promoting a stricter interpretation of Islamic law, the insurgents named the new offensive after a legendary Muslim military commander, Khalid ibn al-Walid. Also known as the "Drawn Sword of God," he was a companion of Islam's Prophet Muhammad.

The Taliban threatened to infiltrate the Afghan security forces and conduct more attacks on Afghan policemen and soldiers as well as foreign troops. Such attacks threaten the strength of the Afghan forces as they work to take over responsibility from international troops. The latest one occurred in March, when a member of Afghanistan's government-backed village defense program shot and killed five of his colleagues in Badghis province in northwest Afghanistan

April has already been the worst month for combat deaths so far this year. According to an Associated Press tally, 257 people ? including civilians, Afghan security forces and foreign troops ? have been killed in violence around the nation. During that time 217 insurgents have died.

Last year during the month of April, 179 civilians, foreign troops and Afghan security forces were killed and 268 insurgents.

Still, U.S. Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford, the top commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, said Wednesday that the security situation had improved across the country, with Afghan forces now leading 80 percent of all conventional operations.

As the traditional fighting season begins, the insurgents will face a combined Afghan force of 350,000 soldiers and police, he said.

"The insurgency can no longer use the justification that it is fighting foreign occupiers ? that message rings hollow," Dunford said in a statement.

Elsewhere in Afghanistan, the Taliban late Friday freed nine civilian de-miners it had captured in the southern province of Kandahar after negotiations involving tribal elders, provincial spokesman Javeed Faisal said.

The Afghan men were being driven back from a mine field last Sunday when they were captured. Afghanistan has a legacy of land mines going back decades and remains one of the most heavily mined countries in the world.

Jets draft QB Geno Smith in 2nd round

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) ? Geno Smith's surprising slide through the NFL draft stopped in the second round.

Now, he might get a chance to be the New York Jets' starting quarterback.

The former West Virginia star was taken with the seventh pick in the second round, 39th overall, on Friday night and could be the future ? or maybe even present ? replacement for Mark Sanchez.

"Once I received the call," Smith said, "I was extremely elated."

Smith went from looking embarrassed and frustrated Thursday night on national TV during the first round, sitting back stage at Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan as pick after pick came and went, and he remained seated and wondered where he'd end up ? and when.

He originally planned to head back home Friday, but opted to stay for the second day of the draft.

"Right now, none of that matters," Smith said during a conference call. "My time has come now."

It's the second straight year the Jets have made major news at the quarterback position, and none of it has been good for Sanchez, although he agreed to a contract extension last offseason. But 12 days later, the Jets stunned the rest of the league ? and Sanchez ? by trading for Tim Tebow.

The selection of Smith by new general manager John Idzik seriously clouds the future of Sanchez, the team's first-rounder in 2009 who led the Jets to consecutive AFC championship game appearances but has struggled mightily the past two seasons. Smith could compete for the starting job this season with Sanchez, who is owed $8.25 million in guaranteed money this season.

"I'm coming in with intentions to compete," Smith said. "We'll see where it goes from there."

But Rex Ryan's Jets currently have Sanchez, Tebow, David Garrard, Greg McElroy and Matt Simms ? and now Smith ? as quarterbacks on their roster. Tebow was expected to be traded or released, but in a surprising twist could now potentially stay.

It remains to be seen whether Sanchez will remain on the roster by the beginning of the regular season, despite his hefty contract.

The one-time franchise quarterback counts $12.85 million against New York's salary cap this year. If the Jets do decide to cut him as a June 1 designation ? and that could be done at any point between now and then ? they would take a salary cap hit of $12.35 million this year and $4.8 million next year.

At this point, with the new future franchise quarterback on board, owner Woody Johnson could be prepared to cut his losses now.

The Jets also drafted versatile Kent State offensive lineman Brian Winters in the third round, and acquired running back Chris Ivory from New Orleans for their fourth-round selection.

New York drafted Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner with the ninth overall pick and Missouri defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson at No. 13 ? a spot they also considered taking Smith ? in the first round Thursday night.

Smith's wait didn't take long Friday night even though a few teams that were expected to be in the mix for him ? Jacksonville, Philadelphia and Arizona ? went in other directions.

Former wide receiver Wayne Chrebet took the podium at Radio City to announce the pick, and Jets fans gathered there were loud, with many cheering and others booing. Smith, considered by many to be the top quarterback available in this year's draft, wasn't even the first player at his position taken. That was Florida State's EJ Manuel, who went to Buffalo with the 16th overall pick on Thursday night.

As Smith sat uncomfortably through the first round, television cameras caught him frowning at times and clearly disappointed that someone who has had so much success on the field was becoming a draft-night punch-line.

"I think it was just a test of patience, a test of character," Smith said. "I wanted to make it my duty to come back today and still represent for my family and all of those that support me."

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers knows the feeling well. He was considered a top-5 pick in 2005, but slid all the way to No. 24 as TV cameras captured many of the same looks that Smith had. Eight years later, Rodgers has a Super Bowl ring and signed a five-year contract extension through the 2019 season Friday.

"Tough situation that I was in eight years ago, but there's a light at the end of the tunnel," Rodgers said at Lambeau Field. "April 24, 2005, I didn't know exactly what I was in for. I remember a great conversation I had with (former Packers linebacker) Na'il Diggs that I was reminded of yesterday. The excitement started to grow when I got to the facility when I saw some of the trophies and the names on the stadium. It's been a great run.

"And hopefully for Geno's situation, he's going to have a similar opportunity and obviously he'll have a lot of people to prove wrong."

Smith came into the draft with mixed reviews, in large part because he was considered not as good a prospect as last year's crop of quarterbacks that included Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Ryan Tannehill, Russell Wilson and Brandon Weeden.

Smith was asked if he believes he is a franchise quarterback, and he didn't hesitate.

"Yeah, I do believe so," he said, "for a number of reasons."

Smith, who owns almost all of West Virginia's passing records, gets rid of the ball quickly, but has had some accuracy problems. He can make completions on the run and is capable of making big plays ? something the Jets sorely lacked last season.

Smith threw for 11,662 yards ? including back-to-back 4,000-yard seasons ? 98 touchdowns and only 21 interceptions in four years at West Virginia. The Miami native had dinner with new Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg before the draft, and Mornhinweg reportedly raved about Smith to Ryan and general manager John Idzik.

"I had pretty good meetings with them and when I visited, it went well," Smith said. "But, as you can see, nothing is really 100 percent. Right now, I'm just proud to be a Jet and I'm ready to get to work."

S.African c.bank says inflation, funding needs to weigh on bonds

PRETORIA (Reuters) - South Africa's Reserve Bank said rising inflationary pressure caused by a weaker rand, a wide current account deficit and relatively high funding needs could weigh on government bond yields.

Should the global economy improve, appetite for emerging market bonds was expected to drop, hurting the long end of the yield curve, the bank said in its annual Financial Stability Review released on Thursday.

South African bonds have traded near record highs in recent days, supported by signs of weak global growth that could cause investors to shift money into higher yielding emerging markets.

Domestic financial institutions have raised their holdings in government debt, the report also said.

Banks increased their investment by nearly 19 percent to 185.4 billion rand in the year to January 2013. The insurance industry added over 20 percent to 161.9 billion rand in the third quarter of 2012.

Microscopic dust particles found in underground railways may pose health risk

Apr. 24, 2013 ? New research from the University of Southampton has found that working or travelling on an underground railway for a sustained period of time could have health implications.

Previously published work suggests that working in environments such as steel mills or welding plants, which are rich in airborne metals, like iron, copper and nickel, can have damaging effects on health. However, little research has been done on the effects of working in an underground railway environment -- a similarly metal-rich environment -- and results of studies that have been conducted are often inconclusive.

New research published in Environmental Science and Technology shows that the small dust particles in the air in an underground railway is quite different to the dust that you breathe in every day and that could have health implications.

Matt Loxham, PhD student at the University of Southampton, explains: "We studied the ultrafine dust (or particulate matter) found in an underground station in Europe. Typically, ultrafine dust is composed of inert matter that does not pose much of a risk in terms of its chemical composition. However, in the underground station we studied, the ultrafine dust was at least as rich in metals as the larger dust particles and therefore, taken together with their increased surface area to volume ratio, it is of potential significance in understanding the risks of working and travelling in the underground. These tiny dust particles have the potential to penetrate the lungs and the body more easily, posing a risk to someone's health."

While coarse dust is generally deposited in the conducting airways of the body, for example nasal passages and bronchi; and the fine dust generally can reach the bronchioles (smaller airways), it is almost exclusively the ultrafine dust which is able to reach the deepest areas of the lungs, into the alveoli, where oxygen enters the blood and waste gases leave, to be exhaled. There is evidence that this ultrafine dust may be able to evade the protective barrier lining the airways (the epithelium), and enter underlying tissue and the circulation, meaning that the toxicity of ultrafine particles may not be limited to the airways but may involve the cardiovascular system, liver, brain, and kidneys.

Mr Loxham adds: "Underground rail travel is used by great numbers of people in large cities all over the world, for example, almost 1.2 billion journeys are made per year on the London Underground. The high level of mechanical activity in underground railways, along with very high temperatures is key in the generation of this metal-rich dust, and the number of people likely to be exposed means that more studies into the effects of particulate matter in the underground railway environment are needed, as well as examining how the levels of dust and duration of exposure might translate to effects on health."

The Southampton team, which included the Geochemistry Group at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton and the Inhalation Toxicology Group at the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) in Bilthoven, initially collected airborne dust from a mainline underground station underneath an airport in Europe. The metal content of the dust was analysed and a detailed elemental profile was established for each dust sample. These profiles were then compared to profiles from other dusts analysed at the same time, for example dust from wood-burning stoves and a heavily-trafficked road tunnel, showing that underground particles were very rich in metals, especially iron and copper. The shapes of individual particles were examined and gave clues as to how the particles were generated. The team then showed that the dust was capable of generating reactive molecules which are fundamental to their toxic effects, and that this was dependent on the metal content of the particles and, importantly, occurred to a greater extent as the size of the individual particles decreased. Further work is now being performed to examine the effects of underground dust on airway cells in more detail and the potential mechanisms by which cells may be able to protect themselves.

The study was funded through the Integrative Toxicology Training Partnership studentship provided by the Medical Research Council UK.

AMD Radeon HD 7990

The new AMD Radeon HD 7990 dual-GPU graphics card is meant to challenge Nvidia at the top of the consumer graphics stack. The HD 7990 combines two HD 7970 GPUs on a single PCB and includes a huge number of bundled games. It's competitive?but exactly how competitive depends on which game you check and whether or not the title is optimized to run on more than one graphics card.

In one sense, the Radeon HD 7990 is actually a bit late to the party. Analysts expected the card to launch a year ago, after Nvidia debuted its own dual-graphics solution, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 690. AMD allowed board manufacturers like PowerColor to launch unofficial Radeon 7990s based on custom design work, but elected not to put an official stamp of approval on its own card. The Sunnyvale, CA-based company remained mum on the topic of whether it would introduce a new dual-core GPU, even after Nvidia launched the $1,000 Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan in late February. As of today, all that changes?the new, official Radeon HD 7990 is meant to compete with both the GTX 690 and GTX Titan at the $1,000 price point.

Design and Features
Spec-wise, the Radeon HD 7990 is a pair of Radeon 7970 GPUs (codename: Tahiti) on the same slab of silicon. Each GPU contains 2,048 stream processors, 6GB of GDDR5, and a 384-bit memory bus. Each GPU is clocked at 1,000MHz, with a 1,375MHz memory clock. The two GPUs communicate directly with each other via a 48-lane PCI-E 3.0 bridge chip developed by PLX.

There are several differences between the new official 7990 and the older PowerColor custom GPU. Clock speeds on the official card are slightly higher (1GHz compared with 925MHz) and the AMD card draws significantly less power. The old PowerColor solution required three 8-pin PCI-Express power connectors and used a three-slot GPU cooling solution. The Radeon HD 7990 has a two-slot cooler and requires just two 8-pin PCIe power connectors. Finally, there's the question of graphics ports. PowerColor's custom HD 7990 offered two DVI ports, two mini DisplayPorts, and an HDMI port. The Radeon HD 7990 has a single DVI port and 4x mini DisplayPorts. These differences imply that AMD spent some time optimizing the Radeon 7990's twin GPUs for lower power consumption before it deployed the cards.

Software is the other area where AMD is pulling out all the stops. Anyone who buys a Radeon HD 7990 will also receive the following games as part of the company's "Never Settle" bundled game promotion:

? Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon (upcoming)
? Crysis 3
? BioShock Infinite
? Tomb Raider
? Far Cry 3
? Hitman: Absolution
? Sleeping Dogs
? Deus Ex: Human Revolution

These aren't just titles someone in marketing plucked out of a hat; they're some of the best games released in the past 12 months. BioShock Infinite is the top-rated game on Metacritic, while Tomb Raider is in third place. Anyone looking to drop $1,000 on a new graphics card has likely played some of these games already, but the bundle is worth roughly $300 (as priced at Amazon). The Radeon HD 7990 wins the all-time "bundled goodies" competition, hands down.

Before we discuss the Radeon HD 7990's performance, we need to talk about its competition. AMD's new dual-GPU is facing down two separate products from Nvidia?the single-GPU supercomputing-derived GTX Titan, with 2,668 CUDA cores and 6GB of GDDR5, and the dual-GPU GTX 690. Like the HD 7990, the GTX 690 sports a pair of GK104 graphics processors on a single PCB connected by a high-speed link chip. Each Nvidia GPU has its own pool of GDDR5 (2GB each). The GTX Titan, of course, is its own animal. It's a single GPU with 75% more cores than a single GK104 GPU and a 6GB frame buffer.

When we reviewed the Nvidia GTX Titan, we noted that the card wouldn't automatically be faster than the Nvidia GTX 690 in every instance. There are times when a pair of graphics cards working in SLI is going to be faster than a single card. There are also times when the reverse is true. Splitting a graphics workload into two sections, offloading those sections, and then recombining the output take a certain amount of time.

Testing and Performance
Our performance comparisons were done using an Intel Core i7-3770K Ivy Bridge CPU, 16GB of DDR3-1600, a 256GB OCZ Vector SSD, and a 27-inch Asus VG278HE monitor at 1,920-by-1,080. The Nvidia GTX 690's performance was simulated using a pair of GTX 680s in SLI; tests have demonstrated that the performance delta between the two configurations is essentially nil. All of our tests were run at 1,920-by-1,080 with maximum details set. Multi-sampled antialiasing was activated when available and turned up to 8x if possible.

In the Civilization V Late Game View benchmark test, the Radeon HD 7990 turned in a score of 93 frames per second (fps), compared with the Nvidia GTX 680 SLI's 98fps and the 102.6fps for the Nvidia GTX Titan. The critically acclaimed BioShock Infinite was a win for the Radeon HD 7990?it hit 108fps, compared with 107 for the Nvidia GTX 680 SLI and 88 for the Nvidia GTX Titan. In Hitman: Absolution, the Radeon HD 7990 had a commanding lead at 85fps, compared with 49fps for the Nvidia GTX Titan and 58fps for the pair of Nvidia GTX 680s in SLI mode.

There were, however, cases when performance slipped the other way. In Diablo III, the Radeon HD 7990 hit 139fps, which wasn't as good as the Nvidia GTX Titan (221fps), but was better compared with 136fps for the Nvidia GTX 680s in SLI. Multi-GPU support is apparently the culprit?Diablo 3 takes minimal advantage of the second GPU. Batman: Arkham City is another game where the Nvidia GTX Titan won by a wide margin: 112fps versus 94.8fps for the Nvidia GTX 680 SLI and 73fps for the Radeon HD 7990. Later investigation proved that Batman: Arkham City doesn't support CrossFire, which leaves the game running on just one GPU.

Which card is "best," in other words, depends on where you look. Historically, Nvidia has done a better job than AMD at providing timely driver updates with multi-GPU support for the latest games, but that trend may no longer be accurate. Since AMD first launched the "Never Settle" program last fall, the company has been putting a great deal more effort into driver updates, multi-GPU support, and sponsoring high-profile games.

The Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan is still the fastest single-GPU card on the market, but if you're looking for a dual-GPU solution, the AMD Radeon HD 7990 is a worthy competitor. Its overall performance is comparable to the Nvidia GTX 690 or (or a pair of Nvidia GTX 680's in SLI), and it comes with a massive game bundle. If you've been out of the game market for several years and are looking to jump back in with a full suite of titles, the Radeon HD 7990 is a great way to do it.

New research constructs ant family tree

Monday, April 22, 2013

Anyone who has spent time in the tropics knows that the diversity of species found there is astounding and the abundance and diversity of ants, in particular, is unparalleled. Scientists have grappled for centuries to understand why the tropics are home to more species of all kinds than the cooler temperate latitudes on both sides of the equator. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the higher species numbers in the tropics, but these hypotheses have never been tested for the ants, which are one of the most ecologically and numerically dominant groups of animals on the planet.

New research by evolutionary biologists Dr. Corrie Moreau of Chicago's Field Museum and Dr. Charles Bell of the University of New Orleans is helping answer these questions. Their findings are presented this week in the journal Evolution.

The scientists used DNA sequence data to build the largest ant tree-of-life to date. This tree-of-life, or family tree of ants, not only allowed them to better understand which ant species are related, but also made it possible to infer the age for modern ants because information from the fossil record in the form of geologic time was included in the research.

This ant tree-of-life confirmed an earlier surprising finding that two groups of pale, eyeless, subterranean ants, which are unlike most typical ants, are the earliest living ancestors of the modern ants. The time calibrated ant tree-of-life showed that the ants found on the planet today can trace their evolutionary origins back to between 139 and158 million years ago ? during the time the dinosaurs walked the Earth (a finding in line with previous studies).

But why are there more species of ants in the tropics? To explain this pattern of higher species diversity for many tropical organisms, biologists have used the analogies of the tropics acting as a "museum" or "cradle" for speciation. In the case of the museum analogy, the tropical climates have more species because this is where the oldest groups persist throughout evolutionary time. The converse of this explanation is that the tropics are a cradle where new species are more likely to be generated.

To better understand where on the planet the ants arose and if any single geographic area was more important for their evolutionary origins, Moreau and Bell reconstructed the biogeographic history of the ants. These analyses found that the Neotropics of South America were vital to the deep and continued evolutionary origin of the ants. This finding suggests that for the ants the rainforests of the Neotropics are both a museum, protecting many of the oldest ant groups, and also a cradle that continues to generate new species.

As ants are one of the most ecologically important groups of terrestrial organisms, these findings suggest that protecting the rainforests of the Neotropics are vital to the health and success of both the ants that live in them and all the other animals, plants, fungi, and microbes worldwide that rely on ants to survive.

Israeli official says drones could replace planes

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) -- Israel's air force is on track to developing drones that within four to five decades would carry out nearly every battlefield operation executed today by piloted aircraft, a high-ranking Israeli officer told The Associated Press Sunday.

The officer, who works in the field of unmanned aerial vehicle intelligence, said Israel is speeding up research and development of such unmanned technologies for air, ground and naval forces.

"There is a process happening now of transferring tasks from manned to unmanned vehicles," the officer said, speaking anonymously because of the classified nature of his work. "This trend will continue to become stronger."

Isaac Ben-Israel, a former Israeli air force general, said however there was no way drones could entirely overtake manned airplanes. He said there are just some things drones can't do, like carry heavy payloads needed for major assaults on targets like underground bunkers.

"The direction is drones playing a bigger and bigger role in the air force," he said. "In a decade or two they should be able to carry out a third or half of all missions. But there are still certain things you cannot do without a piloted plane."

Israel is a pioneer in drone technology. Its military was the first to make widespread use of drones in its 1982 invasion of Lebanon and Israeli companies are considered world leaders and export unmanned aircraft to a number of armies, including U.S.-led forces that have used them in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The unmanned aircraft have been a major part of Israel's arsenal in battling Gaza rocket launchers over the years. Drones were seen as crucial by giving soldiers eyes in the air, keeping watch over rooftops and alleyways in congested urban areas and notifying troops of threats or obstacles in their path. Israel insists its drones only perform surveillance missions but Palestinian witnesses have long claimed that Israeli drones fire missiles in Gaza.

The officer claimed Israel is second only to the United States in the range of unmanned aerial systems its produces. He said he was "aware" that American drones are capable of firing missiles, but refused to say whether Israeli drones could do the same.

The officer cited one technology recently unveiled: the unmanned Hermes 900 aircraft, developed by the Israeli military manufacturer Elbit Systems Ltd. and recently rolled out for Israeli military use.

It features double the performance capabilities of the previous generation of the same unmanned aircraft, the Hermes 450. It can carry up to 350 kilograms, features advanced systems of surveillance and reconnaissance and offers support to forces on the ground and at sea, according to a description of the technology on Elbit's website.

Israel is also looking to develop small tactical satellites that warplanes could launch into the earth's orbit, the officer said.

Unlike satellites in permanent orbit which are more easily monitored by other leading armies in the world, the tactical satellites Israel hopes to develop would be cheaper to build and less susceptible to interception because they would be launched during wartime and there would be less time for foreign armies to track their orbit, Israeli military officials said.

At 60, Pierce Brosnan still a sexy rom-com star

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

He may be on the verge of turning 60, but Pierce Brosnan is looking darned good -- and still taking on roles as a romantic lead. His latest film, "Love Is All You Need" may say it all: In it, Brosnan plays a widower who feels a new spark with the mother of his son's fiancee. He sat down with TODAY's Matt Lauer Monday.

Some aspects of this film mirror Brosnan's own life, including widower-hood, but the actor said "I had no problems with that. ... This man that I play, Philip, has lost a wife, I lost a wife to cancer. ... I lent myself to the project because I thought I could bring something to it, which had a humanity, a sincerity."

The film isn't of the gross-out romantic comedy genre, and instead deals with the love lives of the AARP set (it's also half in Danish, with English subtitles). But getting older doesn't seem to bother Brosnan. "I love what I do and I had a bit of luck and I?m still driven and I turn 60 here next month and I?m very much aware of my time and life and just have nothing but ... humble gratitude for being an actor; it?s a very capricious game," he said.

And as for his 60th birthday, it's just another milestone. "Some days it rattles and shakes in there psychically, but ultimately I feel nothing but a great gift of life," he said. "There's nothing to prove. I feel comfortable in my own skin."

"Love Is All You Need" opens in select cities on May 3.
